Croatia

Although in recent years Croatia has become a fashionable 'go-to' European holiday destination, the country has resisted the lure of mass development to cater for tourists and largely retains its old-world charm and authenticity. A popular and dependable rail network ensures that escorted rail tours in Croatia with Great Rail Journeys offer an excellent opportunity to discover this compelling country.

Modern, high-speed tilting-trains connect Croatia's capital, Zagreb, with other major cities whilst scenic regional routes provide pleasureable journeys which showcase Croatia's unspoilt landscapes, wonderful Adriatic coast and historic towns and villages.

The cost of your escorted rail tour in Croatia covers all travel arrangements, a programme of excursions that is designed to showcase the best of Croatia's natural, cultural and historic attractions, all accommodation and selected meals.

During your Croatia rail holiday with us you'll also have plenty of leisure time to relax or explore a destination in more depth, perhaps by visiting some of Zagreb's museums and galleries, for example.

We take care to choose overnight accommodation that is conveniently situated and offers the best possible comfort, service and facilities. We often prefer family-run hotels for their more personal service and informal, friendly atmosphere.

To look after our guests and ensure that they enjoy a worry-free and rewarding holiday, every rail tour of Croatia is escorted by one of our friendly and experienced Tour Managers. They are happy to assist, answer questions and provide tips and advice on getting the most from every destination we visit.

A brief guide to Croatia

Located in Central and South-eastern Europe, Croatia is bordered by Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The country's coastline, almost two-thousand kilometres in length, features more than one thousand individual islands.

Croatia's terrain varies from the rugged Dinaric Alps mountain range in the south to the vast open plains in the east. Inland from the coast in the central region of Croatia the land consists of unspoilt and forested mountainous highlands. On the western edge of this region, the spectacular Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its series of sixteen interconnected and cascading lakes.

Croatia's coastal climate is Mediterranean; summers are sunny, hot and dry whilst winters are mild but may be wet. Inland, a continental climate can result in high summer temperatures with little or no breeze to moderate them; winters can be harsh and heavy snowfall is not uncommon.

Croatia's cuisine is influenced by its European neighbours - and particularly Italy - but the country is steadily gaining a reputation for the quality of its gastronomy and wines. A long coastline means that fresh seafood is a speciality, but roasted or cured meat dishes are equally popular.

Guests touring Croatia by train should be aware when ordering fish it is customary to serve it baked and whole.

As you journey through Croatia by train you'll discover that the cuisine of inland areas differs from that of the coast. Croatia offers many fabulous dishes but if you're unsure of what a particular dish is, or would like a recommendation our Tour Manager will be happy to oblige.
