Alan B. Ultimate Australia - 29th Oct to 18th Nov 2024. This was our eighth Great Rail holiday and probably our best to date. Yes, the flights are long and tiering; however, they're worth it. Australia is wonderful - the people are instantly likeable, welcoming and they are genuinely pleased that you made the effort to visit. Prices of food and drink are on a par with any big UK city. The sights are incredible and the weather is much better than the UK. Our Tour Leader, Linda M, did a fine job of looking after us and the whole experience was memorable. Any down side? Yes. The Batman's Hill hotel was disappointing and the train journey from Melbourne to Sydney a real slog. The up side? Everything else.

Tour leader has not done the route. Tour price doesn’t include 90% lunch/dinner, feels over priced. It’s a UK company, you need to get used to attendees speak with British English accent. Didn’t fulfill 100% contract engagements. No communication from the company after payment. Actual Itinerary published only days before tour start date.

Overall the trip was good. The highlights were Uluru including a dinner under the stars where you could see the Milky way. The trip down the gorge railway into Cairns. Also the puffing Billy steam railway outside of Melbourne. The Great Coast road tour was also very good with the spectacle of the southern ocean at the 12 apostles. The two day long train trips between Adelaide and Melbourne and Melbourne to Sydney were great for rail fans like me. The trip round the harbour at Sydney, going under it's famous bridge and past the opera house was also a memorable experience. As was the trip up into the Blue Mountains and the trip around the gorge using the steepest railway and cable cars. On the down side to fit all of this in, even with three weeks, meant a tough regime of early rises and late nights. Also the visit to Alice Springs, apart from the old Telegraph station, could have been omitted without missing anything much. Also be prepared for the length of flights to get there and back, some 18 to 20 hours in the air overall each way.

It was an amazing experience, we saw so much and I thought it a very well thought out itinerary. Yes, early starts and a full schedule but so with it! We have so many wonderful memories.
